About this event

After a disaster, the hard part isn’t getting federal recovery money; it’s keeping it through years of documentation, reviews and closeout, a burden FEMA is now shifting further onto stretched local grants staff. Presenter Joseph Yocca , drawing on nearly five years in FEMA’s Fort Myers recovery office, most recently as Acting Federal Disaster Recovery Officer, walks through the stages of a Public Assistance project to show where AI genuinely helps and where it adds risk. AI is good at finding, organizing and drafting from a documentary record, but poor at judgment calls with audit consequences, where a confidently wrong sentence is worse than a blank one. Attendees leave knowing where to start and what to keep in human hands.
